Beannaithe

I chose to write in the ogham language, an ancient language of the trees and the basis of Gaelic. It reads 'beannaithe' from bottom to top, which means
'Sacred'. I chose this word to represent the wood and what it means to me. This wood is precious and a relic of the past. The copper is recycled, the base is
from a boiler and the wire from recent renovations. I am inspired by nature and the 'brehon law', Bretha Comaithchesa or the Laws of Neighbourhood,
once the legal system of Ireland which held trees in high regard. The oak was a member of the the noble kingdom of trees. The highest and most
revered class of trees in ancient Ireland.

This sculpture measures 42" high and the wood is 9" wide.

The History of Bog Wood

The average age of these woods are between 4000-6000 years old, older than pyramids of Egypt.


Boglands are common in the midlands and west of Ireland. They are an acidic anaerobic environment, which have slowly built up from the
decay of vegetation and the breaking down of this matter by micro-organisms. Bog wood refers to the 3 main varieties of trees: Bog Oak, Bog Pine and Bog Yew.

As the boglands formed surrounding trees fell in and were preserved in its low pH environment. Chemical reactions
occured which caused the oak to turn a jet black colour, bog pine has a golden brown colour and bog yew has an auburn colour and is the rarest
of the three. Bog wood is a by-product of commercial and domestic bog cutting, usually left to decay on the sides of commercial boglands.
